On my other Substack, we do a weekly newsletter filled with the news of the week. I try not to do politics over here — but as a Black American Woman everything about me and my life is political.
I’m trying to take breaks and disassociate from the onslaught of news as much as I can because Rest is Resistance. Taking breaks is resistance. Stoping work during all of this — is resistance.
And here is how I do that.
I listen to music — constantly. I read, ferociously. And I watch movies and documentaries. I’m always learning.
So for this 249th Anniversary of rich white dudes fighting for what they want / their rights (The Real American Dream), I say we start viewing America for who she really is — an imperfect nation, an idea, with dreams and aspirations to be and do better…and while we work to make her better — For The People — here are some American protest albums, books you should read (especially in a time like this), and movies, shows, and docs I suggest. Art and Media is one of the first things to be attacked — for a reason.

She [America] is not perfect, but she is ours. And while we figure out how to fight back on this cash / land grab on our nation — rest up, read up, and G up. We’re gonna need to come together to fight this. But first, homework.
And remember. This land is your land. This land is my land.
Hi Jalon! I’ve taken a look through your substack and with your permission, I would love to feature you on my site and write some commentary on your work. Let me know if you are interested! For some background, my name is Arianna Martina and I am the creator of a blogsite called Bigvalleyblue, a forum I have designed in the pursuit of social, environmental and global activism. I feature artists, creators, writers and thinkers-- you name it, on my page as a way to uplift and inspire those who are trying to get their work seen and discussed.
